Michael Carrick has withdrawn from the England squad to play Scotland on Wednesday with an eye infection, Sky
The Manchester United midfielder has been training with the national team but will take no part in the friendly fixture due to the problem. He has instead returned home and is the second United player to pull out of the squad after Ashley Young was forced to depart due to an ankle injury.
Roy Hodgson has a full a compliment to choose from aside from Carrick and Young, including the pairs’ club teammates Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverly. Wilfried Zaha is also among the squad having ended his loan spell at Crystal Palace. Zaha joined United in January but was immediately loaned back to the Eagles and helped Ian Holloway’s side to promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs.
Carrick was in line to win his 30th England cap, and it is not yet known if he will be fit to play for United in their season opener against Swansea City on Wednesday evening.
