Chelsea look set to ditch their efforts to land England striker Wayne Rooney, and have turned their attentions to Porto striker Jackson Martinez, reports The
The Blues have been relentless in their pursuit of Rooney this summer, but have seen bids of £25m and £30m rebuffed as David Moyes looks to stamp his mark at Old Trafford. With Chelsea keen to grab a new hitman before the transfer window closes, boss Jose Mourinho looks set to raid his old club Porto for the 26-year-old.
The Colombian international has previously been a reported target for the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid, and is understood to have a £35m release clause in his contract – meaning that Porto would be powerless to stop the player from moving to Stamford Bridge should the Blues match that price in an official offer.
Even if they do not agree that price as a suitable transfer fee, they remain confident that they can convince Porto to do business for around £25m, and have lined up Anzhi striker Samuel Eto’o as another alternative should the Portuguese outfit decide to take a firm stance and hold out for the full £35m.
Eto’o has been a Chelsea target in the past, and while the club would love to have him on their books he is currently earning in the region of £300k per week in Russia – and this could prove the major stumbling block.
