Chelsea have rejected Barcelona’s offer for David Luiz, the
The offer from the Catalans was registered late on Tuesday evening and immediately rejected by the Blues. Barca valued Luiz at around £35m but were told that not only is Luiz not for sale, but neither are any other members of the Chelsea squad, the newspaper adds.
Luiz is one of four players said to be considered crucial to the club’s future by Mourinho, along with the attacking trio of Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and Oscar. Mourinho also factored in the lack of time remaining in the transfer window as, even if he was minded to sell Luiz, with less than a month of the window remaining he would struggle to find a suitable replacement of similar quality.
Chelsea signed Luiz from Benfica in January 2011, paying a fee in the region of £21m. He will now compete with John Terry and Gary Cahill for a place in Mourinho’s starting XI, with the Portuguese not signing a central defender this summer upon his return to Chelsea.
Luiz missed Chelsea’s win over Milan in New Jersey on Sunday due to a hamstring injury, and did not take part in the club’s defeat against Real Madrid, Mourinho’s former side, in Miami on Wednesday, again due to injury.
