Chelsea veteran Lampard struggling to be fit for England friendly

England may be without Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard when Scotland travel to Wembley for a summer friendly international, the Daily Mail has reported.

Lampard is struggling with an Achilles injury and has missed much of the Blues’ pre-season programme, travelling to Asia with his teammates but not playing a part in any of the three games that took place. Chelsea are now in the United States and Lampard could feature in one of the club’s later friendlies.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said: “Frank is recovering but of course we don’t want to take risks. Hopefully he plays (on the tour), I won’t say the second match but maybe the third or fourth.

England are due to play Scotland on August 14, four days before Chelsea begin their Premier League campaign with a trip to newly-promoted Hull City. By then Chelsea will have travelled almost the circumference of the globe over the summer – the Mail estimates the Europa League holders will have done 24,622 miles, just short of the 24,901 miles accepted as the distance around the planet.
