Liverpool left-back Jose Enrique has welcomed the arrival of Valencia’s Aly Cissokho, and the competition that it will provide,
The Reds completed the season-long loan deal for Cissokho, 25, last week, and the Frenchman made his first appearance for the club as a substitute during Saturday’s win at Aston Villa. Although he occupied a left midfield position at Villa Park, he has been brought in to provide Enrique with stiffer competition for the left-back slot.
Since arriving at the club from Newcastle United in the summer of 2011 Enrique has been largely first-choice in the absence of severe competition, and has been a consistent performer, with two goals and nine assists in his 80 appearances for Liverpool.
And the 27-year-old Spaniard is pleased by the signing of Cissokho. He said: “I welcome the competition. If Liverpool sign another left-back then I understand it because it was just me here last season.
“Sometimes Glen Johnson had to play left-back. We need two players for every position, and I like it when I have competition. If you have somebody there who is really fighting for your position then it can bring more out of you because you know if you don’t play well then you’ll lose your place.”
Cissokho was allowed to move to Liverpool by Valencia despite being a first-team regular last season, making 36 appearances and scoring twice
