Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney’s future will depend on the reception he receives from the club’s supporters in two upcoming pre-season fixtures, according to ESPN,
David Moyes’ side face a friendly away to Swedish side AIK Stockholm, before Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial match against Sevilla at Old Trafford, and it appears that should Rooney play a part in either game, the reaction of the fans will dictate whether he stays, or decides to leave.
Chelsea are known to be chasing Rooney, with their boss Jose Mourinho declaring that he was their only remaining transfer target. The England international has been unsettled since towards the end of last season, after which he denied that he had submitted a transfer request. His supposed desire to leave led to him being booed in his last home appearance.
Rooney was then said to be feeling ‘angry and confused’ after Moyes seemed to suggest that he would be second-choice to Robin van Persie in attack. Man Utd do not plan to allow Rooney to leave however, although Chelsea are reportedly waiting to discover the reception he receives in the testimonial before launching a second bid, having seen a £27m offer rejected in July.
