Tottenham Hotspur non-executive director Sir Keith Mills fears that the club will struggle to prevent star player Gareth Bale from moving to La Liga giants Real Madrid should he wish to, according to Sky
The Cardiff-born midfielder has been the subject of a bid reported to be at £85m from the Spanish club and Bale is believed to be keen on the move. And Mills has expressed the difficulty Spurs will have in keeping hold of the Welsh international.
“We very much want Bale to stay,” he stated, before admitting: “If a player is desperate to leave, it’s very difficult to force him to stay. We’ve seen it in other clubs. Even if he has a contract, you can’t force somebody to play for you.”
Bale joined the North London club in the summer of 2007 and his star performances, particularly last season, have attracted the attention of Europe’s leading clubs. The prospect of guaranteed Champions League football at Madrid will be a factor that Spurs may have difficulty competing with. Bale, in spite of the speculation, was at the training ground with the rest of the squad on Tuesday.
