Liverpool launch bid for Atletico forward Diego Costa

Liverpool have made a £21m offer for Atletico Madrid forward Diego Costa, BBC Sport has reported, with the sum tabled by the Premier League side thought to trigger the release clause in the Brazil international’s contract.

Costa has been at Atletico since 2010 and scored 10 goals in last season’s La Liga campaign, helping Atleti to third in the table and a place in the Champions League group stage. Atletico are not thought to have issued a response to Liverpool’s offer as yet.

The BBC claim the move for Costa is not related to the Luis Suarez situation, with the Uruguay international keen to leave Merseyside and Arsenal having had a number of bids turned down for the player. There is a dispute over the wording of a clause in Suarez’s contract but the Premier League have not been called in to mediate.

It was suggested by Atletico Coach Diego Simeone that Costa could be on the move this summer after David Villa moved to the Vicente Calderon from Barcelona. Radamel Falcao has already left the club in a big-money move to Ligue 1 side Monaco.

Last season in all competitions Costa netted 20 times in 44 appearances, having scored nine goals in 16 games the year before while on loan from Atletico at Rayo Vallecano. He previously played for Valladolid, Albacete and Celta Vigo, moving to Spanish football after turning professional with Braga in Portugal.
