Liverpool target Anzhi playmaker Willian

Liverpool hope to capitalise on the financial woe of Anzhi Makhachkala by swooping for Brazil international Willian, the Daily Mirror has reported, with the Reds hierarchy hoping the transfer would raise morale around the club that has dropped during the Luis Suarez saga.

The club’s owners are willing to finance one big money signing this summer and Brendan Rodgers has identified Willian as the player he wants. Anzhi are willing to sell despite only signing Willian eight months ago, paying Shakhtar Donetsk £32m, but now have to cut costs after their owner reduced his funding of the club dramatically.

Rodgers has previously attempted to sign Shakhtar’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Atletico Madrid forward Diego Costa, coming up short in both approaches, but has the money for Willian available without having to sell Suarez first.

Tottenham Hotspur, long-standing admirers of Willian, will likely rival Liverpool for the 25-year-old. Head Coach Andre Villas-Boas first tried to sign Willian for Chelsea. Willian has only played a handful of games for Anzhi, having spent five years at Shakhtar.
