Liverpool target Willian wants Premier League move to boost World Cup chances

Anzhi Makhachkala midfielder Willian wants to move to Liverpool, the Daily Mirror has reported, in order to boost his chances of turning out for Brazil at the World Cup in 2014.

Willian only moved to Anzhi in January but the Russian club’s owner has withdrawn his funding, leading to a fire sale of the high-earners. Willian was signed from Shakhtar Donetsk for £30m and the newspaper adds that Liverpool are reluctant to pay a fee in the same ballpark, which would lead to a delay in the deal.

But Willian is clear in his wish to move to the Premier League. “There are conversations, and I am hoping in the next few days for an offer from a club like Liverpool,” he admitted.

If it is Liverpool, then they are a great club. The news came as a real shock, but I’m calm about it and hoping for the best, because I’ve been told they will help the players to go, if they get a good offer.

Willian added that the Anzhi players have been informed the club is to return to Makhachkala from its current Moscow base and the squad will be made up of Russian players, with the foreign stars allowed to leave. Willian continued: “It’s not true that we will be allowed to leave for nothing. But the owner has said if he gets an offer close to what he paid for the players, then they can go.

So I am hoping there will be something from Liverpool, because England has a league that I’ve dreamed of playing in.

He currently has two caps for Brazil but finds himself behind the likes of Oscar in the national team pecking order. Willian believes however that if he can prove himself in the Premier League, he can win a regular place under Felipe Scolari. “ think it would be good for my image. I would grow professionally in the Premier League, and it can be a showcase for me in a World Cup year,” he said.
