Liverpool willing to sell Downing to Newcastle at huge loss

Stewart Downing could be set for a £5m move to Newcastle from Liverpool, the Guardian has reported, with the Reds willing to sell the England winger and take a huge loss on the £20m fee they paid Aston Villa for his services in 2011.

Downing forced his way into Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers’ side for a spell last season after originally being told he could leave the club in the January 2013 transfer window, but is not thought to have much of a future at Anfield under the current boss, and has already attracted attention from West Ham. Newcastle are keen as well, however, but have had to make signing strikers their priority.

The former Middlesbrough winger turned down a move to the Hammers but with two years remaining on his contract, which sees him paid £80,000 per week, Liverpool would be willing to let Downing move to Tyneside. It is not yet known, however, if Downing is willing to leave Merseyside and return to the north east. Downing has made 91 appearances for Liverpool, scoring seven times, and previously featured in 82 games for Villa, finding the net on 11 occasions. He started his career at Middlesbrough, making more than 200 appearances in an eight-year span.
