Rooney has been the subject of huge speculation for months since reports stating that he was unhappy at Manchester United. The rumour intensified following comments from manager David Moyes in the summer which seemed to suggest that Rooney was perceived as second-string to last season’s top scorer Robin van Persie.
There have already been two unsuccessful bids from Chelsea to secure Rooney, who has two years remaining on his contract at Old Trafford and is reportedly prepared to hand in a written transfer request.
Macari, who spent the bulk of his playing career with the Red Devils, scoring 78 goals, believes the constant speculation is not doing Rooney any favours.
“Wayne’s situation, whether he’s going to be at Manchester United or somewhere else come the start of the season, is becoming more and more difficult for him,” Macari said.
“Manchester United fans are patient. They want the best players there and there’s no doubt that Wayne over the time he’s been at the club, has been one of the greatest because his goal-scoring record tells you that. And one of the greatest should be remembered as a great Manchester United player, but as time goes on people are losing patience.”
