Man City assessing Kompany injury

Manchester City are waiting on news of the injury suffered by captain Vincent Kompany during their 4-0 Premier League win over Newcastle, BBC Sport has reported.

Kompany appeared to injure his groin in a challenge with Newcastle substitute Sammy Ameobi, limping off in the 71st minute after making a sliding tackle on the Magpies winger. The Belgian said in a tweet shortly after the final whistle: “Injury is a blow after all the hard work. I’ll be back to that level in no time. Thanks for all the support.

City manager Manuel Pellegrini declined to say whether or not the injury would force him for sure into the transfer market, but did admit that a long-term problem could see City swoop for a defender. “ he doctor will see exactly what he has,” Pellegrini said, “But maybe we can think about another centre-back.

Pellegrini was already without Matija Nastasic, who picked up an injury in pre-season, while Micah Richards was carrying a slight knock and, as such, was not involved in the match. The Chilean can call upon Dedryck Boyata but against Newcastle used Spanish midfielder Javi Garcia as a partner to Joleon Lescott. City also allowed Kolo Toure to leave the club at the end of the season when his contract expired, the Ivorian joining Liverpool.

City won the game 4-0, taking the lead through David Silva after six minutes. Sergio Aguero doubled the advantage before half-time while Newcastle had Steven Taylor sent off, and after the break goals from Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri gave Pellegrini a winning start to his City tenure.
