Manchester City will entertain Newcastle United as they look to bounce back from their disastrous title defence campaign last time out.
Manuel Pellegrini takes over from Roberto Mancini at the Etihad and has brought new recruits with him in the form of Jesus Navas, Stevan Jovetic, Alvaro Negredo and Fernandinho. With almost £90million spent many see the blue side of Manchester posing a serious threat to United’s crown. Fans will want to see a more competitive European campaign under their new man Pellegrini.
Newcastle narrowly avoided relegation last season, and fans will be calling for heads to roll if the club are drawn into another relegation scrap. Strikers were on the menu for Newcastle but so far only Loic Remy has been tempted to St James’ Park. However, first team injuries that ravaged their squad last term look to have cleared up and Alan Pardew will be looking for a much improved season.
Matija Nastasic will miss out through an ankle injury sustained in pre-season, and looks likely to miss the first few games. New singings Navas, Negredo and Fernandinho are ready for selection and could well make their debuts.
Remy will miss out on making his debut for the Magpies through a calf injury, while Ryan Taylor continues his recover from a knee injury picked up last season. Jonas Gutierrez has question marks over his fitness due to a hamstring injury and could well miss out.
