Man Utd forward Welbeck reveals delight at lining up with Rooney for England

Danny Welbeck has revealed he was delighted to partner Wayne Rooney for England, Sky Sports has reported, after the Manchester United teammates went throughout the summer without playing together due to Rooney’s injury problems.

Both Welbeck and Rooney started at Wembley against Scotland, Welbeck scoring England’s second equalising goal in the 3-2 home win, and Rooney playing just over an hour after missing much of United’s pre-season programme and the Community Shield due to injury, with rumours persisting over his future at Old Trafford.

But Welbeck, who played the entire game, was pleased to get the chance to play with Rooney again. “It’s really good to link up with him. I’ve been playing with him for a very long time now,” he said.

Once we’re on the pitch we know each other’s games. I’m just really happy for him to get out on the pitch and get his first game of the season. We all know the quality Wayne Rooney possesses. To have him on the pitch for Manchester United is a bonus.

Welbeck’s goal was his sixth for England, coming in his 17th game. The other goals on the night were scored by James Morrison, who put Scotland in front, Theo Walcott, who levelled for England, and Kenny Miller, who gave Scotland the lead for the second time before debutant Rickie Lambert sealed the win.
