Man Utd not giving up on Fabregas despite Barcelona claims

Manchester United retain hope of signing Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas, BBC Sport has reported, despite claims from the Catalans that the Premier League champions have ended their interest in the former Arsenal midfielder.

United have had two offers for Fabregas rejected and Barca’s sporting director, Andoni Zubizarreta, told a Spanish newspaper that United had signalled their intent to move on to other targets, but the BBC believes a third bid is incoming from David Moyes.

Zubizarreta said: “Manchester United are interested in the player, but it’s also true that they understand our position of not wanting to sell. They have renounced his signing. We aren’t going to sell him,” adding on Barcelona’s official website: “He has a contract with us. We count on Cesc.

But an offer likely to top United’s transfer record is being prepared, according to the BBC. That would mean surpassing the £30.75m paid to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2008 for Dimitar Berbatov, now of Fulham, and approaches the £35m fee Barcelona paid Arsenal for Fabregas in 2011.
