Newcastle anger at Arsenal offer for Cabaye

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has attacked Arsenal for their conduct in making an offer for midfielder Yohan Cabaye hours before the Magpies’ first Premier League game of the season, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

The Gunners lodged the £10.2m bid on the eve of Newcastle’s trip to Manchester City – a game that ended in a hefty defeat for Pardew’s side, with Cabaye not included after Arsenal’s approach left him in the wrong state of mind to feature in the game. “We have prepared with the lad for three days and for him to have his head turned by this bid by Arsenal is just disrespectful in my view,” Pardew said.

Why it couldn’t have waited until tomorrow I don’t know. The result wouldn’t have been the same if he’d played in my view,” the manager added.

The attempt to sign Cabaye is viewed by the newspaper as a reaction to Arsenal’s opening day defeat at home to Aston Villa, the injury problems currently afflicting Arsene Wenger’s squad and the pressure the manager has come under to spend money after making only one free transfer signing in pre-season.

I think it is just a very difficult situation when a player gets news like that,” Pardew added. “And it wasn’t us who gave him the news. It is very hard to get your head around to play a game of this magnitude.

It is pretty obvious I am upset about that and I would rather focus on what for us has been a tough day. We have 37 games to go and we need to make sure we don’t let this game emotionally scar us.

I am not sure of the exact terms of it [the bid] but it is below our valuation of the player for sure This is a terrific player.

Pardew went on to suggest that the transfer window should be closed before the start of the new season. The Telegraph also reveal that Newcastle owner Mike Ashley’s reaction to the offer made by Arsenal was to ask the London club’s negotiator, Dick Law, which part of Cabaye he expected to sign for £10m, and to come back with at least double that amount.
