Newcastle play down reports of Downing move

Newcastle United have played down any prospect of the club making a move for out of favour Liverpool winger Stewart Downing, reports the Chronicle.

The Magpies have distanced themselves from a move for the 29-year-old after speculation had linked Downing with a possible move to St James’ Park. This followed reports that he had been offered to Newcastle, and other Premier League clubs, for a cut price of £5m.

However, Downing, who has already played in the North East for home-town club Middlesbrough, is not believed to be part of Toon manager Alan Pardew’s plans. With the Magpies already having the services of Sylvain Marveaux, Hatem Ben Arfa, Jonas and Yoan Gouffran in their ranks on the left-hand side, Downing is considered surplus to requirements at the club, who are believed to be more interested in securing a striker before the new season.

Talks with Bafetimbi Gomis from Lyon and Darren Bent are understood to be on-going.
