Newcastle United have entered the race to sign Juventus striker Alessandro Matri, who is also being targeted by Premier League rivals Everton and Sunderland, according to Metro.
Juventus have placed a £6m price tag on the Italian international, a valuation which Everton and Sunderland are both struggling to match. In contrast, Newcastle have made contact with Matri’s agent, with their manager Alan Pardew, and director of football Joe Kinnear seemingly intent on signing another striker.
After bringing Queens Park Rangers forward Loic Remy to St. James’ Park on a season-long loans, Newcastle have seen deals for two other strikers, Aston Villa’s Darren Bent, who has just joined Fulham on loan, and Lyon’s Bafetimbi Gomis.
Pardew has experienced frustration in his attempts to make new signings this summer, with the much documented return of Kinnear has overshadowed things. So far, only Remy has arrived at the club, and they will enter Monday’s Premier League opener at Manchester City with largely the same squad as last season.
