Newcastle without Santon for Man City trip

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has a left-back selection headache for the trip to Manchester City, the Shields Gazette has reported, as Davide Santon is unlikely to feature due to injury – leaving Pardew to choose between Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa or Paul Drummett.

Yanga-Mbiwa is a centre-back capable of playing in either full-back position, while Drummett, 21, would be making his Premier League debut but is in contention after a strong showing with the first team through pre-season. Santon is likely to be absent due to a lack of match fitness while the squad’s other natural, senior left-back, Massadio Haidara, has struggled with injury over the summer.

Whoever Pardew chooses for the left-back spot will have to contend with City winger Jesus Navas, the newspaper adds. The former Sevilla wide man is one of a number of City’s new signings who could feature in the opening Premier League game of the season – Navas has been joined at City by Sevilla teammate Alvaro Negredo, as well as Fernandinho, formerly of Shakhtar Donetsk, and Fiorentina forward Stevan Jovetic.

Pardew also has a question mark over Jonas Gutierrez, who strained his thigh during the friendly draw with Braga a week ago, but centre-back Steven Taylor should be available despite missing training.
