After a successful return to the top flight last time round, Southampton will look to cement their Premier League status and build on a creditable 14th place finish. Mauricio Pochettino takes charge of his first full season at the helm, and has strengthened his squad in key areas as he looks to push for a top half finish.

The Saints have added Croatian centre half Dejan Lovren to their ranks, in addition to new club record signing Victor Wanyama, brought in from Celtic for £12.5m. The Kenyan will become the first man from his country to play in the Premier League, and his power and presence will bolster a midfield containing last season’s player of the year, Morgan Schneiderlin. The Frenchman excelled at St Mary’s in his defensive midfield role, receiving plaudits for his high interception and tackle rates, in addition to chipping in with five goals and the ninth highest pass completion in the league.

The combination of Schneiderlin and Wanyama ought to complement the attacking talent of Gast
