Roma star Pablo Osvaldo has rejected a £16m move to Southampton, according to The
Osvaldo was the subject of a Saints’ club record transfer bid, but has rejected any approaches by stating that the only clubs he would leave Roma for are fellow Serie A outfit Inter Milan or Premier League club Tottenham.
With Spurs’ technical director Franco Baldini being a former chief at Roma, the connections between the two clubs are thought to be very good – and so an eventual deal to see Osvaldo and his team-mate Erik Lamela move to White Hart Lane certainly remains plausible.
Osvaldo has found himself on the transfer list at the Italian outfit following a series of fallings out with Roma chiefs and also the club’s fans, and Southampton had seen this as an advantage in their advances. However, Spurs appear keen on the Roma duo, and should the deal be completed the north Londoners would see their summer spending exceeding £60m.
They broke their transfer record earlier this summer with the £26m capture of Valencia striker Roberto Soldado, and have also added the likes of Paulinho, Nacer Chadli and Etienne Capoue to their ranks as they bid to return to the Champions League after narrowly missing out in the last two seasons.
