Rooney asks to train with Man Utd reserves in bid to prove fitness

Wayne Rooney has asked to train with the reserves at Manchester United following his selection for the England squad to face Scotland. The 27-year-old striker trained with the second string at his own request in a bid to gather some match fitness, having not having played a game so far this summer.

The Daily Telegraph are reporting that Rooney is set to miss the club’s Community Shield fixture against Wigan at Wembley on Saturday. The paper also claims that the striker is also in-line to miss out on defender Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial against Sevilla on Friday. The club though have been quick to refute any speculation linking Rooney’s time with the reserves to his uncertain future.

Old Trafford officials have stated that Rooney wanted to train with the reserves, as this would be a more strenuous workout than the one planned by David Moyes for the first team squad. The United front-man has been selected as part of the England squad to face Scotland despite not having featured in any of United’s six pre-season workouts this summer through injury.
