Suarez says he is staying at Liverpool

Luis Suarez has told media in Uruguay that he is to stay at Liverpool, the Daily Mirror has reported, although he has not apologised for his conduct over the summer.

It was first claimed by a Uruguayan journalist that Suarez had told him he would remain at Anfield, Martin Chaquero writing on Twitter: “Luis Suarez confirms to me he will not leave Liverpool. The support of the fans has influenced his decision…Suarez see it as likely that he’ll sign a renewal (extension) to the contract that binds him to Liverpool.

And it appears Suarez has confirmed as much, telling El Observador: “For now, due to all of the people’s affection (for me), I will be staying.

Suarez has repeatedly spoken of his desire to leave Liverpool this summer, with Premier League rivals Arsenal keen on buying the former Ajax forward. But Liverpool had rejected the Gunners’ approaches, insisting – contrary to claims from the Suarez camp – that a clause in the player’s contract did not mean they had to sell Suarez when an offer of over £40m was made.

The 26-year-old has been at Liverpool since January 2011, moving from Ajax. He has since made 96 appearances for the Reds, scoring 51 goals.
