Tottenham boss Villas-Boas praises Defoe

Tottenham Hotspur Head Coach Andre Villas-Boas has waxed lyrical about the depth in his squad, Sky Sports has reported, with Jermain Defoe coming in for particular praise after the team’s 8-0 aggregate Europa League win over Dinamo Tbilisi.

Spurs had a 5-0 advantage from the first leg ahead of the return fixture at White Hart Lane on Thursday evening, and rather than rest of the hefty score line, Spurs pushed for more goals which duly arrived. Defoe claimed a brace while Lewis Holtby also netted.

We couldn’t be complacent. All the boys did extremely well,” Villas-Boas said. “ After a 5-0 win you can come into the game with a laid back attitude. They didn’t. They kept their professionalism and got some chances and got some good moments of football with some good combinations.

The Portuguese singled out Defoe for acclaim after the England striker started the season as Tottenham’s second choice striker, behind former Valencia centre-forward Roberto Soldado. “Jermain has the goal scoring ability and once again he proved it tonight,” Villas-Boas said.

What we are trying to do is build a strong team with strong players and everyone has to compete for a place,” he continued. “We always want to make teams stronger than before so players who are in the top five of Tottenham’s all-time goal scorers can only make you stronger.
