Tottenham are planning to hijack Liverpool’s efforts to land Ajax pair Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld by tempting the players to north London, reports The
Spurs have launched a £15m double-swoop on the Dutch club for the players, and while that may seem on the cheap side both have contracts which expire next summer, and so hopes are high that Ajax will cash in on the duo now rather than lose them for nothing next year.
Both players are believed to favour a move to the Premier League, having turned down numerous offers to go elsewhere. Until now, Liverpool were believed to be favourites to land the pair, but with Spurs now being touted as an alternative the Reds’ face some stiff competition.
With the Anfield outfit still trying to sort out the situation surrounding Luis Suarez, Spurs are also embroiled in a battle to keep one of their own star players – Gareth Bale – but are believed to be set to make a move shortly considering the cut-price nature of the deal.
With Eriksen in particular having attracted much interest from across the continent, and been offered a bumper pay package to join clubs in the likes of Italy, Germany and Russia, both Premier League clubs are aware that a move elsewhere remains possible, despite reports that the English top flight is where he hopes to play next season.
Speaking about interest in him, midfielder Eriksen, 21, said: “I am prepared to wait. I will only go where my heart wants to go.
“I am patiently waiting what will happen in the next few weeks. But I have said before I only want to go to a club where I feel I can play at my best and which suits my style.
“I am ready for something new, I am ready for bigger options. But it has to be right.”
