Tottenham Hotspur Head Coach Andre Villas-Boas has revealed he hopes England manager Roy Hodgson takes better care of Andros Townsend than he has the most recent Tottenham call-ups, Sky
Townsend was named in the party to play Moldova and Ukraine in World Cup qualifiers in September but Villas-Boas has said he is concerned over Townsend’s involvement after the experiences of past Tottenham players. The Portuguese added that a number of his players have been brought in to the England set-up before they are guaranteed a place for their club, played once and then cast aside.
And Villas-Boas disclosed he was not informed by Hodgson of the plan to include Townsend in the squad. “I wasn’t contacted in any way or form by Roy Hodgson regarding the player call-up because I would have preferred to give my opinion on the fact that he gets caught up so soon,” Villas-Boas said.
Villas-Boas went on to say that continuity has been missing from England’s squad selections – and that for Townsend’s sake, he hopes this is the start of regular call-ups to the senior side. “If there is to be any continuity to the future of Andros in the national team, it’s a great step for him.
“If the player doesn’t get involved in Tottenham and, in the end, he gets dried out then it’s a big surprise for me, because I think a player who gets called up for the national team after two games should have respect and continuity towards the future,” Villas-Boas continued. “So I assume from this moment that there will be that belief.
“I can recall, last season, we have Jake Livermore, Tom Huddlestone, Steven Caulker called up for England. At the moment, it doesn’t seem to have any continuity there.”
The three players Villas-Boas discussed each left White Hart Lane this summer, Livermore moving to Hull on loan and Huddlestone making the same trip on a permanent basis, and Caulker joining Cardiff City.
“The only thing I’m reflecting is on a couple of examples from the past,” Villas-Boas said. “In the end, Jake, Tom, were competing to get into the Tottenham team. They couldn’t. And, in the end, their England call-ups disappeared.”
