Aston Villa host Newcastle coming off the back of two straight league defeats, while the Magpies are looking to build on their first goal and win of the Premier League season.
Villa’s league position may tell you a lot less than their performances have merited. They performed admirably at the Emirates to win, while loss to Chelsea and Liverpool still brought out good displays from Paul Lambert’s young guns. Villa have added seven players this season but it looks to have helped the squad rather than hinder it, and they could be a surprise this season after narrowly avoiding relegation last year.
Newcastle’s woes are far from over, despite a last gasp win over Fulham. The team is still lacking any attacking edge – they have scored just one goal in their three league games, while just scrapping past League Two side Morecombe in the cup. The close of the transfer window will help Alan Pardew. He now knows who he is definitely working with and will hope to start putting in some better performances. While no star signing ever arrived on St James’ Park, the squad has some real talent amongst it.
There is only one injury concern for Aston Villa, and Charles N’Zogbia will miss the game with an Achilles injury.
Newcastle’s only definite absentee will be Ryan Taylor as he conitunes to recover from his serious knee injury. Jonas Gutierrez is currently struggling for fitness with a hamstring injury and may not feature, while Mike Williamson and Gabriel Obertan will need to be checked before the game.
