Bale pressured Tottenham into Real Madrid sale, says Villas-Boas

Tottenham Hotspur Head Coach Andre Villas-Boas has claimed Gareth Bale put pressure on the Premier League club to agree to sell him to Real Madrid, the Daily Telegraph has reported, after Bale completed a world record move to La Liga on transfer deadline day.

Villas-Boas told a meeting of coaches in Switzerland that before the transfer was confirmed it has reached the point where he was considering if it was even possible to keep hold of Bale, such was his state of mind and determination to move to Spain. Spurs and Madrid eventually agreed an £86m deal, with Bale presented to the media as a Madrid player on Monday afternoon.

The pressure we were subjected to by the player has been intense,” Villas-Boas said. “The influence of Real Madrid has been very big and you get to a point where you have to consider if it’s feasible not to accept an offer and whether you can press on with a player in that state of mind.

Obviously, we should be happy with the transfer fee that was paid. Players want to win championships and I believe that with Gareth that is within reach. At the end of the day, it’s up to a player to decide if he wants to stay or wants to go,” the Portuguese added.

The transfer was held back by Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy until Spurs had completed a host of signings of their own, spending much of the transfer fee even before it arrived as the club broke their own transfer record three times in a matter of months, the newspaper points out.

Villas-Boas went on to say that there is a growing feeling among managers and coaches that the window should close before the new season starts. “The clubs like it as it is but the coaches are of the opinion that the market should be closed earlier,” he said.

The coaches need time to prepare their teams for the season. Most coaches would like it to be open less time and closed earlier; obviously we will have to have further meetings.
