Chelsea are lining up a £25m bid in order to fight off competition from Arsenal for Marseille midfielder Giannelli Imbula in January, reports the Express.
Despite only recently joining the Ligue 1 club, reports in France suggest that the 21-year-old remains near the top of Jose Mourinho’s list of priorities.
Alike Didier Drogba, Imbula moved to Marseille from Guingamp in July for a £6.3m fee, but the French club could be persuaded to part with the Belgian-born midfielder for a fee in the region of £25m.
Blues legend Didier Drogba also played a single season with Marseille after joining Guingamp and making a £24m move to Stamford Bridge in 2004.
Imbula was eligible to represent Congo through his parents but has now pledged his allegiance to France after representing them at Under-21 level.
The midfielder was elected ‘Best Player of Ligue 2’ in May 2013 and has since featured in an impressive start to the season for Marseille, scoring one goal from five appearances in the side.
