While finishing in the top four remains Liverpool’s target for this season, left-back Jose Enrique is hopeful that the club can make an unexpected challenge for the Premier league title, Goal.com
Liverpool have made an excellent start to the new season, winning all three Premier League games, beating Stoke City, Aston Villa and Manchester United, each by a single goal. However, Enrique is not getting carried away, insisting that Champions League qualification is still the immediate aim.
Asked if Liverpool could become Premier League champions, he said: “You never know but we have to be realistic. Our target is to be in the top four, hopefully we can fight for the title, that would be unbelievable.
“But we have to keep our feet on the ground, it’s just the start and we have only played three games. There are still many games and things can change so much, but hopefully they don’t!’
The Reds have relied on Daniel Sturridge to score their goals this season, with Luis Suarez absent while he serves a 10-match ban. The Uruguayan is likely to make a return later in September, and Enrique believes that will only be a good thing.
He added: “We are doing well without him but Luis Suarez is always more than welcome. He is one of our best players if not the best, I think he’s important for us and when he comes back it will be great.”
