Everton vs Chelsea – Premier League preview

Chelsea return to Premier League action after an absence of three weeks, as they travel to Goodison Park to face an Everton side still looking for their first league win under Roberto Martinez.

Everton have drawn each of their three fixtures so far, but with a bit more luck, could have won all of them. However, stalemates with Norwich City, West Bromwich Albion and Cardiff City rather played second fiddle to Manchester United’s attempts to sign Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini. They eventually got Fellaini, but Martinez responded with three signings of his own.

At Chelsea, much of the talk has surrounded Juan Mata’s role under Jose Mourinho, after being a peripheral figure in their opening games. Seven points from nine is a good return for the Blues, and many of the features of Mourinho’s first spell in charged appear to have returned with him.

The experienced Gareth Barry could make his Toffees debut on loan from Manchester City, as can James McCarthy, who is under pressure to fulfil his £13m price tag. Romelu Lukaku will have to wait as he cannot play against his parent club.

Samuel Eto’o and Willian, both signed from Anzhi Makhachkala, could start for Chelsea, while defender David Luiz is in line to make his first league appearance of the campaign.
