Former Manchester United defender Henning Berg believes that Marouane Fellaini can become the club’s ‘new Eric Cantona’, the Daily
The £27.5m deal to bring Fellaini to Old Trafford from Everton was confirmed in the very late stages of transfer deadline day, as the Belgian became David Moyes’ only significant summer acquisition after missing out on the likes of Fabio Coentrao, Cesc Fabregas and Ander Herrera.
The 25-year-old arrives after spending five years at Everton, during which he scored 33 goals in 177 appearances in all competitions. And Berg, a two-time Premier League winner, thinks Fellaini can emulate the achievements of Cantona.
He said: “He’s got great potential and if he’s consistent with his best level, he will be a fantastic signing. He can play so many different positions, he’s a good footballer but there’s something about him.
“He can get players around him, he can control and dominate games and I think United have too few players who can do that – that’s why I think he will be a great signing. When Cantona came, he had that mentality every game. I’m not saying he’s going to be the same, but he can be.”
Fellaini is in line to make his Man Utd debut on Saturday, as the Red Devils take on Crystal Palace at home in the first Premier League match after the international break.
