Liverpool vs Southampton – Premier League preview and team news

Top of the early season table, Liverpool will hope to continue their impressive start at home to Southampton, who are without a Premier League win since the opening day.

Brendan Rodgers’ side dropped their first points at Swansea City on Monday, and suffered a major blow as Philippe Coutinho sustained a shoulder injury that will keep him out for six weeks. On the positive side, Daniel Sturridge continued his record of scoring in every game with an opportunistic strike while Victor Moses capped his debut with goal. And it also remains Liverpool’s best start to a Premier League campaign.

Southampton have played fairly well over their four games, but only have the last-gasp win at West Bromwich Albion to show for it. Last time out, they were frustrated by a dogged West Ham United, and manager Mauricio Pochettino will be concerned by the lack of goals, with just two scored, and record signing Pablo Osvaldo not yet off the mark.

Coutinho’s injury adds to an already mounting list for Liverpool, who already have Glen Johnson, Joe Allen and Aly Cissokho out, while Daniel Agger is doubtful. Luis Suarez will soon be available again however, with this the final game of his 10-match ban.

The Saints will again be without Daniel Fox, while there was more frustration for Japanese forward Tadanari Lee on Monday, as he picked up a knock on his return from injury.
