Liverpool’s defence sorted for the long-term, believes Rodgers

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes he has signed the players to marshal the Reds’ defence for the long-term, the Daily Mirror has reported, after the summer captures of Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori.

The pair were brought to Anfield late in the transfer window and followed Kolo Toure, the former Arsenal and Manchester City centre-back, to the red half of Merseyside. It took a combined £22m to sign Sakho and Ilori, the Mirror claims, and after the retirement of stalwart Jamie Carragher, Rodgers is confident he has the players to safeguard Liverpool’s future as well as maintain the present, with Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel both still at the club.

I wanted to try and protect the present and the future of the club,” Rodgers said. “Centre-halves are so hard to find. You look at some teams and they have ageing centre-halves because it’s a struggle to get a really good one. We were fortunate in that two became available.

One that we had been tracking for a year was Tiago Ilori, a young talent, but who can become a big talent,” Rodgers continued. “He is 6ft 3ins tall, super quick, powerful and can jump. He just needs to adapt to the pace and physicality of the Premier League. He is one for the future, but he can be a really big talent.

He added: “Sakho is also young, but he is an experienced player. He has senior international caps for France and looks an absolute monster in training. He’s one who is ready for now and that’s what we want.

We had a chance to do that and protect the club for maybe the next 10 years and that is what we’ve done.

Liverpool have yet to concede a goal in the Premier League, recording three consecutive 1-0 wins over Stoke City, Aston Villa and Manchester United, although their defence was twice breached by Notts County in the Capital One Cup.

It is expected that Toure and Agger will line up for Liverpool against Rodgers’ old employers Swansea City when Liverpool travel to the Liberty Stadium on Monday evening, as Rodgers restores the partnership that began the season following Toure’s injury-enforced absence against United.
