Newcastle United goalkeeper Tim Krul has said that his side must combat the set-piece threat of Everton’s Leighton Baines when the sides meet at Goodison Park on Monday evening, the Daily
Baines is currently one of the more prolific set-pieces takers in the Premier League, with two goals direct from free-kicks helping Everton to victory away to West Ham United in their last league outing. Newcastle and Krul have also been on the receiving end of a Baines free-kick, when the left-back smashed in from over 30 yards as Everton won 2-1 at St. James’ Park in January.
Revealing that his preparations for the game have included facing free-kicks from Hatem Ben Arfa in training, Krul said: “I saw his goals (at West Ham) and he scored a fantastic free-kick against me last season from 30 yards. I owe him one and I hope he doesn’t score against me this time. He’s one of the best free-kick takers in the league.
“There’s not really anything you can do in training to prepare. I just hope he doesn’t hit one as well as he did last season. I’ve had Hatem firing a few free-kicks at me to help.”
Ahead of the game, Everton are the Premier League’s only unbeaten side with two wins and three draws, while Newcastle are in the bottom half with seven points from five games.
