Ozil reveals Wenger call convinced him to make Arsenal move

Mesut Ozil has revealed that a telephone conversation with Arsene Wenger convinced him to leave Arsenal for Real Madrid, the Guardian has reported, after the manager offered the Germany international what Ozil felt was missing from life at the Spanish club.

Ozil moved to the Premier League on transfer deadline day after Wenger consented to paying a club record fee of just over £42m for the 24-year-old, despite Ozil originally hoping to remain at the Santiago Bernabeu. But, he admitted, speaking to Wenger turned his head and put his mind at ease about the prospect of playing at the Emirates Stadium.

Somehow this telephone call just flicked a switch in me,” Ozil said. “I thought: ‘What he is telling me is what I have missed at Real: transparency, trust, respect. He told me exactly how he sees me [as a player], how he wants to use me, what he expects from me and what he hopes I will contribute.

Ozil added that he wants now to win trophies with the Gunners, with Arsenal unable to claim any silverware since the FA Cup in 2005. “I want to win titles and will do everything in order to do that. That is my mentality,” the playmaker said.

We will do everything to get as far as possible in all the competitions,” Ozil continued. “I learned that at Real. I don’t go into any competitions saying: ‘The aim us to reach the semi-finals or the final.’ When I play, I want to win.

Ozil will find some familiar faces at Arsenal, as the club already boasts German internationals Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski, while Wenger speaks fluent German, having grown up near the France-Germany border.
