Liverpool will be looking to bounce back from two straight defeats when they travel to Wearside to take on managerless Sunderland.
Another eventful week at Sunderland ended on Sunday evening with the sacking of Paulo Di Canio, who left after five and-a-half months in charge. Kevin Ball, who took charge on Tuesday’s morale-boosting Capital One Cup win over Peterborough United, will again be in the dugout as the search for a new manager continues, hoping to help the Black Cats move off the foot of the Premier League table.
Top after four games, a lacklustre performance at home to Southampton saw them lose their unbeaten record and drop to fifth. They missed the creativity of Philippe Coutinho there, but they responded with a better performance against Manchester United on Wednesday, albeit losing to an early second half goal. Luis Suarez played well on his long-awaited return, but again the Reds were let down by a lack of clear-cut chances.
Lee Cattermole should keep his place in the Sunderland team after returning on Tuesday, but Steven Fletcher will be out for a lengthy spell with a dislocated shoulder.
Suarez is likely to start again alongside Daniel Sturridge for Liverpool, although Glen Johnson, Aly Cissokho and Joe Allen are still on the sidelines.
