Wenger retains faith in Arsenal striker Bendtner

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has insisted he has faith in Nicklas Bendtner, Sky Sports has reported, and the boss has backed Bendtner to get the Gunners crowd back on side.

Bendtner has not played for Arsenal since May 2011, spending the past two seasons on loan away from the club, first at Sunderland and then Juventus, and seeing a summer move to Crystal Palace collapse. It is even longer since Bendtner’s last Arsenal goal, coming as part of a hat-trick against Leyton Orient in March 2011 FA Cup replay.

Wenger believes however that Bendtner can make light work of any critics among the Arsenal crowd by showing his quality on the pitch, adding that strong showings are what supporters care most about. “Fans forgive you everything as long as you produce the performances on the football pitch,” Wenger said.

That’s what people want. I think our fans have a positive attitude towards Bendtner and they will be behind him. Only you can create that with your performances,” the manager continued.

Wenger added that he has been impressed with Bendtner’s attitude in training, praising the Denmark international for his approach despite the disappointment of his move to the Eagles breaking down. “He has responded with a good attitude in training and with good, hard work,” Wenger confirmed. “He had nearly gone somewhere else and in the end he stayed because it didn’t work out and we needed him here.

Now he can convince everybody. We are open minded, we believe in his qualities. I personally believe in his qualities. It’s just down to attitude and fighting spirit. When he has that, Nicklas can be an unstoppable striker. He gets his chance. Our job is about that. Take your chance.
