Manchester City will be looking to bounce back from their comprehensive defeat to Bayern Munich as they travel to Russia for an early kick-off on Wednesday, where they face CSKA Moscow, on a pitch that has been heavily criticised.
Despite having been outclassed by the reigning champions of Europe, Manuel Pellegrini’s side remain favourites to make it to the knockout stages at the third time of asking. The two games they now face against CSKA Moscow are likely to determine their fate, with Viktoria Plzen appearing set to finish bottom of Group D.
Man City come into to this off the back of their first away win in the Premier League this season, which was achieved on Saturday at West Ham United with Sergio Aguero – who scored twice – particularly impressive. They currently lie fourth in the Premier League with 16 points from eight games.
CSKA Moscow have made a disappointing start domestically, as defeat to reigning champions Zenit St. Petersburg last time out saw them slip to sixth in the table after 13 games. After victory over Plzen in their last Champions League match, they are level with Man City on three points from two games.
The visitors are still short in central defence, with captain Vincent Kompany again absent and summer signing Martin Demichelis still waiting to make his debut. Jack Rodwell is also out, with a hamstring injury.
