West Brom manager Steve Clarke has revealed his confidence in veteran striker Nicolas Anelka after the Frenchman missed chances during his side’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Sunday, Sky
Albion became the sixth different Premier League club Anelka has played for throughout his career after Shanghai Shenhua released him in during the summer. The 34-year-old had a number of opportunities to score against his former employers, but failed to convert any for what would have been his first goal since arriving at the Hawthorns.
Baggies manager Clarke has remained confident in the experienced striker, reassuring supporters that he will score goals. “Nicolas is an experienced striker and he knows he was in the right position,” Clarke said. “The first chance actually arrived a little bit behind him, which meant it was difficult to finish.
“For the second one he did almost everything right. He opened the goal up and just put it the wrong side of the post – we’re talking inches. On another day he could have scored both. Strikers need goals and ‘Nico’ is experienced enough to know if he keeps getting in those positions he’ll score goals.” Clarke added.
Claudio Yacob’s opener was cancelled out by Jack Wilshere’s 63rd minute strike to share the spoils at the Hawthorns, regaining the top spot in the league for the Gunners.
The Baggies travel to Stoke City after the international break and the Potters will go into the game following three straight defeats in the Premier League.
