The Belgian has acknowledged that they must beat the Premier League’s so-called lesser clubs if they want to achieve their aim of qualifying for the Champions League, having narrowly missed out on making the competition in each of the previous two seasons, with Tottenham instead having to settle for a place in the Europa League.
He said: “You look at the top teams. If you want to be champions, you have to win these ‘small games’. You can see it’s the difference with the guys who become champions – they win these games. If we want to be there with the top four we need to win them too.
“It’s easier to play against the top teams for the motivation, but if we want to be a top team we need to be focused for these kinds of games.”
Tottenham currently sit sixth in the Premier League after the weekend reverse, with 13 points off top spot, which is occupied by rivals Arsenal going into the international break.
