Hart in danger of losing Man City place

Joe Hart is expected to sit out Manchester City’s Capital One Cup trip to Newcastle on Wednesday, the Daily Telegraph has reported, with the England international’s place in the side for the Premier League match against Norwich at the weekend also in doubt.

Costel Pantilimon, City’s back-up goalkeeper, will play against Newcastle, although that was expected even before Hart’s error at Chelsea. Hart came rushing out of his goal to clear a long ball in the final minutes of the match, only for Matija Nastasic to head the ball past Hart and allow Fernando Torres an easy finish to gift Chelsea the 2-1 victory.

Should Pantilimon impress at Newcastle, he would be under consideration for his first league appearance – despite joining City two years ago. City manager Manuel Pellegrini offered Hart little public support following his mistake at Stamford Bridge and it is understood the Chilean has lost patience with Hart, who has made a number of errors so far this season.

Pellegrini is also expected to sign a goalkeeper once the January transfer window opens, the newspaper adds, with Stoke City’s Asmir Begovic, Real Madrid’s Iker Casillas and Malaga’s Willy Caballero among the potential targets. A lack of competition is considered part of the cause of Hart’s form, as well as a drop in confidence.

The 26-year-old Hart moved to City from Shrewsbury Town in 2006, then spent time on loan at Tranmere Rovers, Blackpool and Birmingham City before claiming the City No.1 spot. He has gone on to play more than 200 times for City and won 37 caps for England.
