Liverpool defender Kolo Toure has insisted the Reds can challenge for and win the Premier League title this season, according to ESPN.
Toure began his career in English football with the Gunners and believes they are legitimate title contenders – but is adamant his current club are as well. “Of course we are [contenders] because we have so many great players,” he told the Liverpool Echo. “The way we are playing shows that. This is a fantastic club.
“We want to win trophies and we want to win the title definitely,” Toure continued. “Arsenal are contenders too, as there are some fantastic people there.”
Toure is likely to line up for Liverpool against Arsenal on Saturday and is already wary of the threat Arsene Wenger’s side will pose. However, he argues, the match will be just as difficult for the home side. “Of course it will be difficult but we are a strong team and we have a great manager as well,” Toure said. “They know that we pose a threat to them too and they know it will be a tough game for them,” he added.
The 32-year-old joined Liverpool over the summer after leaving Manchester City on a free transfer. He originally signed for City from Arsenal in a 2009 move worth around £16m, having joined Arsenal for £150,000 in 2002. He made more than 300 appearances for Arsenal, winning the Premier League title in 2003-04 as part of the Arsenal side that went the full season without losing a league game.
