Lovren happy with Southampton start

Croatian defender Dejan Lovren has expressed his happiness with joining Southampton from Lyon in the summer, admitting he made ‘the best possible move’ by joining the Saints, reports Sky Sports.

Lovren made the summer switch from the French side for £8m, and has been a vital member of Mauricio Pochettino’s team since arriving on the South coast. “I made the best possible move by coming to Southampton,” Lovren said.

From day one in this club everybody from the board, manager and fans they all tried to show me how much I’m appreciated and how much they wanted me.

Lovren was full of praise for the club, revealing the general good mood in the camp. “They showed with the fee they paid for me what I meant but other things make you happy: the way you feel every day in training, getting along with your team-mates, communicating with manager and coaches. I’m really happy to be part of this club.

The Croatian believes the successful start from Southampton is down to each and every player, not just the defence. “To concede just three goals in nine games in this league is very hard so we deserve the respect now from the others,” he said.

But it’s the whole team, not just the four in defence and the goalkeeper,” Lovren continued. “It’s each player, we all work hard on the training ground. It’s a pleasure to play every day with these players.

Pochettino introduced a philosophy when arriving in England to press high and keep the ball, similar to the Barcelona style of play. “We keep the line very high,” Lovren explained. “I’ve never played like this before and it’s a level with risk. But we’re doing a good job.

For now, everything is perfect but we still want to improve each day. I’m very proud of the team, we’re young and we’ve already shown the character – but the next few games will be a big test for us.

The defender has represented Croatia at all levels from Under-17s to the senior squad, where he has played 21 times, scoring twice. Lovren’s first goal for Southampton came against Liverpool, which proved to be the winner at Anfield. The Saints now sit fifth in the Premier League table.
