Man City hope to have captain Kompany back for Chelsea

Manchester City are hopeful that their captain Vincent Kompany will return to the side for next weekend’s tie against Chelsea, ESPN has reported.

The Belgian centre-back suffered a thigh injury during his side’s 3-1 home win over Everton. Kompany played no part in Belgium’s World Cup qualifiers and will miss this weekend’s game with West Ham, and is likely to miss the midweek Champions League tie at CSKA Moscow. Manager Manuel Pellegrini said: “Vincent is working hard. He is not ready to play but I hope next week he will be [fit].

The Chilean also added that summer signing Martin Demichelis could also return to action in the Chelsea tie. The centre-back, who signed for City in a £4m deal from Atletico Madrid this summer, having only joined the Madrid side earlier that same window, suffered a hamstring injury just days after arriving.

The ex-Malaga player appeared for City’s development squad against Rochdale this week, and came through the match with no problems. Although this weekend’s game is too soon for Demichelis, his manager is hopeful he will return for the Chelsea tie. “Demichelis played last Wednesday 45 minutes for the reserves,” Pellegrini added. “I think he is in the shape as Kompany, I hope that next week both of them could be fit.

City, who lie fifth in the table, travel to the capital to face a West Ham side full of confidence after their 3-0 victory at Spurs last time out.
