Man City midfielder Rodwell wants League Cup to be a platform for success

Manchester City midfielder Jack Rodwell has highlighted the importance of the League Cup to the team’s success in other competitions, the Independent has reported.

The England international said that the team are eager to win in all competitions, as they prepare to take on Newcastle on Wednesday evening in the Capital One Cup. City travel to St. James’ Park looking to progress to the quarter-finals of the competition following an inconsistent start to their league campaign.

New boss Manuel Pellegrini is likely to make wholesale changes to his side for the League Cup tie with his eye on upcoming Premier League and Champions League games. But Rodwell is keen to keep the intensity high.

The 22-year-old, who has suffered an ongoing hamstring problem this season, said: “We want to win as many games as possible. Obviously the Champions League and Premier League are the biggies and obviously if you could win any it would be one of those two.

He added: “But you also have the FA Cup, which is important to fans and us players – we all want to win that – and obviously we just came up a bit short last year. Then you have got the Capital One Cup, which is a good competition as well. We want to be fighting in every competition.

Rodwell made the move to the Etihad Stadium in 2012 for a fee of £12m from Everton, but has struggled to have an impact on the first team since his arrival, making just 16 appearances, scoring two goals in the process.
