Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is targeting a summer move for Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso, the
The Spanish international’s contract comes to an end in the summer of 2014 and Mourinho, who worked with Alonso at Real Madrid, is keen on bringing the playmaker to Stamford Bridge.
The Portuguese coach is hoping to seal the deal in the January window, and will use his close relationship with the former Liverpool star to help clinch the deal. The two were spotted talking and embracing at Chelsea’s pre-season friendly with the Spanish giants in America.
One sticking point to the deal could be Alonso’s relationship with Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard. Alonso blamed the England international for breaking his ankle in 2005.
Lampard reacted to the matter by saying: “I felt very bad and phoned to apologise but he wouldn’t really have it and ever since he has that look in his eye when we meet, and there is always a bit of jostling and shoving.”
Alonso left the Merseyside club in 2009 for a fee of £30m and has been an integral part of Los Blancos side ever since. The Spanish capital club are confident they can tie down a new deal with the 31-year-old.
A product of the Real Sociedad youth system, Alonso has been absent for nearly six months with back-to-back injuries but is set to make his return in the league fixture with Andalucian side Sevilla on Wednesday.
Current Madrid boss and former Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti said: “He is over his injuries, now we need to get him playing. Xabi Alonso is very important for Real Madrid.”
Madrid will be looking to bounce back from their defeat in El Clasico on Saturday, and they take on a Sevilla side who are coming off the back of a 2-1 victory over Osasuna at the weekend.
