The first Premier League encounter after the international break takes place at St. James’ Park, as Newcastle United take on second-placed Liverpool.
After two straight defeats, Newcastle responded well by taking victory away to Cardiff City, with Loic Remy taking his impressive tally in a Magpies shirt to five goals in his opening three games. Alan Pardew remains under pressure, however, and his target will be to avoid a repeat of last season’s embarrassing 6-0 home defeat at the hands of Saturday’s opponents.
Liverpool, who have made their best start to a season for several years, are currently behind leaders Arsenal on goal difference, having recovered from a shock defeat to Southampton with comfortable victories over the Premier League’s bottom two. Although tougher tests lie ahead, the partnership between Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez in attack is blossoming.
Newcastle are without three key players for this match, with captain Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor both ruled out, meaning Pardew will not have his first-choice central defenders available. Jonas Gutierrez is absent due to personal reasons.
Brendan Rodgers welcomes back Lucas Leiva following his one-game ban, while Joe Allen, Aly Cissokho and Glen Johnson could all return from injury. Philippe Coutinho is still out, but should return for the game against West Bromwich Albion on October 26.
