Poyet set to be named new Sunderland boss

Sunderland are poised to announce the appointment of Gustavo Poyet as their new manager in the next 24 hours, according to Sky Sports, two weeks after the decision was taken to end the reign of Paolo Di Canio.

Di Canio was sacked after he led the team to just one point from five matches, along with a reported falling out with several of the players on the club’s training ground. Kevin Ball has acted as caretaker manager during the search for the Italian’s successor, but has not been able to improve results, with home defeats to Liverpool and Manchester United already leaving Sunderland six points adrift of safety.

Poyet was relieved of his duties by Brighton and Hove Albion in the summer, following an internal investigation which was begun as a result of the former Chelsea and Tottenham midfielder’s comments after the Seagulls’ play-off defeat to Crystal Palace in May.

During his time at Brighton, he guided the club to the League One title in 2010-11, his first full season in charge, and established the club in the Championship. The Uruguayan has been the clear favourite for the Stadium of Light vacancy in the previous week, having also been linked with other Premier League clubs in the close-season.
